“I’m fine, thank you, and you?” Fulbright grantees have probably heard this line more times than they care to count. When I ask my students “How are you?” more often than not they automatically chirp, “I’m fine, thank you, and you?” It’s a simple answer to a simple question — one so ubiquitous that it even has its own song.
Readjustment

It wasn’t until a fairly recent Skype call with a current ETA that a certain question came up: “How was readjusting for you?” To be honest, I haven’t thought about it in a long time, but hearing it suddenly sparked visions of just how long it has been since returning home from Korea.
Opera in the East

“You. Sing.” Cheong Ho pointed to the book he’d just placed on my music stand, a vocal score for Gian-Carlo Menotti’s opera, “Amahl and the Night Visitors.” He flipped open the cover and traced his finger down through the character list, stopping on the last role: The Page.
